Until recently most employee training was done
either on the job or in a classroom with an instructor. This reality is changing
quickly as computer and Internet technologies have enabled trainings to be
delivered via a digital medium. This medium can be a CD-ROM or DVD or installed
on a computer, and increasingly these trainings can be delivered online via the
Internet or intranets. In all cases, these trainings are interactive (to greater
and lesser degrees) and they do not require an instructor – or the role of an
instructor is minimized.
There are many logical reasons why eLearning is catching on very quickly.
When you have to teach 1,000 or 50,000 employees in disparate locations, it’s too expensive to fly them to a classroom, hire teachers and put them all
up in hotels. Once a training is ‘digital,’ it is easy to make changes –
and our world is quickly changing. Learners can also go at their own pace and
most convenient time. eLearning courses are inherently consistent and deliver
the same branding values and information across the board to all learners. This
list goes on, but the advantages are clear. The ROI has been positively
established for bringing trainings into the eLearning world.
At SweetRush we specialize in the development of eLearning courses and have
crafted many effective trainings for our clients. When you merge teaching with
technology, you can develop exciting new ways to teach – but there are new
challenges as well.
We do not expect our clients to be experts at eLearning – that is our job.
Does your course require audio and video, should it be Flash or HTML, and how
about animations, simulations and avatars? Should the course be built in a
Content Management System – how hard will it be to update? What if you want
profiling, where different users in different locations or lines of business, or
perhaps with different skill levels, can take different versions? What about
SCORM and integration into your Learning Management System – or future LMS? What
about interactive assessments and learning games?
The point is there are many issues to consider in forging a highly effective
eLearning training course. While the list of considerations above is enough to
give anyone a headache, you can relax; it is our job to consult with you and
advise you on the options and the best way to go given your realities.
We have the clients who can verify that we helped them through the
challenges of developing highly effective eLearning courses.
